In winter of 2006 while working as the
Dean of Students at a local charter school, LPA’s founder, Da’shone
Hughey, realized that many of the youths he encountered had no fathers in the
home for them look up to as role models. The prevailing culture of violence
they were exposed to in gangs, their relationships with peers, the movies they
watched, the music they listened to, and hardships in their personal lives
resulted in his founding of the Wall Street Brothers. The goal of this group
was to change and reverse the effects of this deeply ingrained pattern considered
a public welfare issue that has had lasting negative effects on these young
men.
Five core concepts were taught to these young men:
- Knowledge of Self
- Awareness
- Confidence
- Assertiveness
- Professional Appearance
During the summer of 2007, in collaboration with the Army National Guard,
he created a unique comprehensive summer camp for urban males that encompassed
Leadership, Discipline and Manhood. Twenty (20) young men enjoined at the camp.
Young Men were trained in the art of Leadership in conjunction with the Army
National Guard and roomed with new cadets entering the Army National Guard.
To date, four of the young men are now eligible to attend college for free.
Six of the young men are now honor roll students. All twenty of the young men
successfully passed state required graduation test. In the fall of 2007, the
Wall Street Brothers were awarded $10,000 from an investment firm after their
performance in a Stock Market Challenge. One young man received a scholarship
for $2,500.00 after winning a regional oratory contest. Out of these outstanding successes and others, Leadership Prep was created
to serve the specific needs of urban males.
